Having always worked in an accounting practice I’ve been very much locked in an office and given my jobs for the week. I’ve not had to market myself or the businesses I worked for… until now!
In the last 18 months I have thrown myself in at the deep end and although I am no expert, and probably never will be, I thought I’d share some of my useful tips & advice with my lovely blog readers (if there are any, I could just be typing these for fun and google rankings of course!).
Well that leads me nicely on to my first point…
1) Get blogging! Even if no-one is reading, regular updates on your website will help your google rankings. In fact I am now appearing on the first page of google amongst websites that have been around for longer than I’ve been alive!
2) Get tweeting! It’s 2014, everyone uses Twitter. When I was told to sign up my first thought was how unprofessional, an accountant on twitter, but that’s because I’d been locked in my office for over ten years. Every proactive business is on Twitter. Get yourself on #eastmidlandshour where 600 business communicate regularly (8-9 Wednesday evenings).
3) Get branded! Have an eye catching logo, well made business cards and leaflets and last but not least make sure you have a slogan. Many businesses know our slogan ‘your business is our business’ before they know the business name. Although, that’s often my fault for putting a random ‘e’ in Darcey.
4) Get networking! The face to face kind, on top of Twitter. I have gained many clients from networking as well as great business contacts. People love to get to know you and your personality so my tip for networking is always be yourself. There are informal networking groups and closed groups that are more structured. They all work so make sure you try them all.
